Beer Versus Wine – Cheeseburgers
Congratulations to November’s Beer Versus Wine Challenge winner – me! Part of the honor includes coming up with December’s challenge. Participants have until next Wednesday, December 11 to turn in their suggestion before we take it to a vote. The ante is upped this month. Not only does the winner receive the honor of presenting January’s challenge, they also receive a tasting kit from Negra Modelo as part of their #theperfectcomplement campaign!
Heaven on Earth with an Onion Slice!
“Tried to amend my carnivorous habits.
Made it nearly seventy days,
Losin’ weight without speed, eatin’ sunflower seeds,
Drinkin’ lots of carrot juice and soakin’ up rays.”
Come on. Some of you know what I’m hinting at? Where are my Parrot Heads at? Although seventy days without this American staple of bun meets beef meets cheese meets lettuce and tomato meets mustard and catsup meets pickle meets delicious would cause me to have nightmares.
“But at night I’d have these wonderful dreams
Some kind of sensuous treat.
Not zucchini, fettuccini, or bulgur wheat,
But a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat.”
Okay, you gotta know what I’m talking about now.
“Cheeseburger is paradise medium rare with mustard’d be nice
Not too particular, not too precise
I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise.”
There. I said it. Well, maybe Jimmy Buffett said it. But I’ll happily quote that sage of the beach.
Cheeseburgers!
This month’s Beer Versus Wine Challenge is Cheeseburgers! If you’re like me, it’s a welcome break from the cold weather and formality of holiday dinners.
Let’s take a break from the (yawn!) turkey and ham and indulge in a treat that I know we’re all craving. And while we’re on the topic, why aren’t Cheeseburgers served at Thanksgiving instead of turkey? Nothing says “Merica better than a juicy Cheeseburger. That’s a meal I’d actually be thankful for!
Help me out here. Let’s finish Jimmy Buffett’s song with our perfect beer or wine pairing with Cheeseburgers.
“I like mine with lettuce and tomato
Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes
Big kosher pickle and a…”
Maybe it’s an IPA or a glass of bubbly. Tell us…

I’m going to go with the holiday spirit and suggest Abita Christmas Ale which is a big, dark ale that works well with rich food- especially a juicy burger topped with cheese.
Love the holiday cheer (and beer)!
I didn’t expect this from myself, but the first pairing which comes to mind is … beer! I would go with the nice, hearty Porter – I think it would be a great pairing no matter what toppings are used on that cheeseburger..
Talkavino I think your account has been hacked. Somebody suggesting beer instead of wine…
well, yeah, I know – but again, thinking of cheeseburger, beer is the first thing which comes to mind. Of course if I would have a bottle of Cheval Blanc 1961, is Miles did, I could’ve have a different opinion, but I don’t. Lastly, I might be having fun at your expense – as you generally like to say, someone will have defend the wine, so I’m looking forward hearing about your suggested pairing 🙂
While I am not participating this month since I can’t win the prize, I’ll still come up with a pairing. Something wine. Not sure what though.
Hmm, this is a fun one. The beer suggestions have been nice so far, and I was tempted to try to pick up the torch of wine for talkavino, but a burger needs a beer… For me, I don’t tend to just eat a plain old burger any more. It needs to be high quality beef, and the toppings are usually extravagant. To bring it back to the classic cheeseburger, however, I think I’d go with a nice funky biere de garde. In particular, I’m thinking Abbaye de Saint Bon-Chien by BFM (which has a long list of foods it would pair well with). The beer has near port-like qualities, but still comes across lighter, and has a brilliant tart twang, and a light acetic bite that will play nicely into the ketchup while contrasting the gooey cheese. Meanwhile, the caramel malts, the brown sugar, and the dark cherry notes will pair wonderfully with the rich burger. While the carbonation is near non-existent, its still there, and should help to lighten the heavy burger, while still allowing the palate to marvel at the burger’s qualities. I wouldn’t put this beer beside a McDonalds burger, but for a high quality cheeseburger, I think the beer would be a beautiful accompaniment.
That would have been funny if you came up with a wine! I do like your beer choice though.
Well isn’t this is a nice change from the holiday ham and turkey, indeed! I’d go with a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon with my cheeseburger, something inexpensive yet hearty with dark fruit. If the cheeseburger has bacon on it (why wouldn’t it?!) then I’d pair it with a slightly smokey, juicy Rioja. I’ve been craving a burger so now I may just need to go out and get one to test out my answers! Cheers.
How did it go last night? Did you play with your pairing suggestions.
Oh, and I thought it was understood that all cheeseburgers came with bacon on them?
Holy guacamole! All you southern boys need to visit Santa Fe and treat yourself to a Santa Fe Bite’s GREEN CHILI CHEESEBURGER. Book-end by a specially made sourdough bun this burger is a two-fister. I can guarant-damn-tee you it will be the best burger you’ve ever had. Pair with a Left Hand Brewery Polestar Pilsner – the true test of a brewer. Light, crisp and perfect with a burger.
Is this burger you mention just another version of the rest of us will need a pitcher of water and a Pepto for the morning?
I can tell you will be leaving off the green chilis! Weeny!
I have no defense.
