Things to do in Orlando Besides Theme Parks

We all know the Orlando that the glossy brochures present to us – expansive hotels with spacious suites and pristine pools, shopping outlets that create a giant hissing sound from our wallets, and amusement parks loaded with themed rides and happy-go-lucky music that makes you want to punch a mascot. There has to be something more to Orlando than the likes of Universal Studios, Sea World, and Disney. There has to be things to do in Orlando besides theme parks!

This guide will help you explore things to do in Orlando besides theme parks with plenty of off-the-beaten-path attractions a short driving distance of hotels in Orlando.

Natural Wonders of the Everglades

Located at the mouth of the Everglades, the obvious first choice beyond thrill rides and cotton candy is to experience natural wonders that will make any mouse ear lover ashamed for spending money to see zoo-animals at the Animal Kingdom.

Nature lovers flock to Wekiwa Springs State Park, where activities range from snorkeling amid patches of reeds and schools of fish to hiking the 13-mile trail through pine scrub, river estuaries, and dry sand hill terrain. The more adventurous can rent a canoe and paddle along the Wekiwa River to spot alligators, sea turtles, or the elusive Florida black bear and wonder whether it’s safer on land or sea. There are plenty of hotels near Wekiwa Springs State Park for those looking for a more peaceful stay than in the heart of the Orlando tourist district. Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Orlando Altamonte Springs is a fan favorite.

Downtown Orlando

Most tourists think that Downtown Orlando is a world away from the expensive and time-consuming theme parks. It’s actually only a 15-minute drive and well worth the visit. If you happen to be in Orlando on a Sunday, check out Eola Market where locals gather weekly to shop the fresh produce and artisan stands. Even if you don’t want to shop, the market houses a beer and wine garden that offers fun people-watching.

Downtown Orlando also has a vibrant dining and nightlife scene that doesn’t consist of deep-fried chain restaurants and artificial nightclubs. Just be careful if you opt for one of the popular three-for-one happy hour specials. Those are per person and will quickly creep up on you (true story).

Downtown is also a great place to stay while you’re in Orlando with plenty of hip and comfortable hotels.  My personal favorite is Grand Bohemian Hotel Orlando in terms of class and uniqueness. Aloft Orlando Downtown is a more affordable option.

Catch Some Culture at a Museum

Why not catch some culture beyond the stereotypes offered at Epcot Center? Orlando has plenty of museums to help educate the kiddos and give mom and dad their cultural fix. The Orlando Science Center offers educational fun for the entire family with hands-on exhibits. A fan favorite are the fossil digs where kids get to rummage through the dirt for dinosaur bones.

If art is what you’re looking for, head over to the Orlando Museum of Art. The museum houses 10 to 12 exhibits annually as well as a year-round collection. Or check out the architectural art of Andrew Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern College houses the largest collection of his works. Enjoy a guided tour through his Usonian House.

There are also plenty of awesome spas in Orlando! Check out my Orlando Spa Guide for more details.

Don’t be intimidated by Orlando. Allow the kids their indulgences at the theme parks, but be sure not to stop there. There are plenty of things to do in Orlando besides theme parks.
