You’re in Amsterdam, and you’re not that into pot or prostitutes (I bet the city wishes it could shed that image). Instead, you’re there to see the “sights”. All kidding aside, there are plenty of things to see and do in Amsterdam, from admiring 17th century architecture to dining on modern cuisine, to ambling along the maze of canals and soaking up the cities vibrancy. Why not stay in a hotel along one of the canals? Here are five of the best canal hotels in Amsterdam.
The Best of the Best
De L’Europe is the most famous hotel in Amsterdam and also one of the most luxurious. Not only are guest spoiled with Turkish baths, they have easy access to the best of Amsterdam’s restaurants and bars, both of which are located in the hotel. Of course, the hotel is also in the center of the city, within walking distance of the city’s flower market and best shopping. You will pay extra for these digs, but isn’t the best worth it?

Stay in a Monumental Shipping House
Operators of the Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam transformed an old shipping house into a five-star hotel. Of course, the art deco nuances were upheld throughout with stained glass windows, wood floors, marble decor pieces, sculptures and carvings, sea creatures, ships, waves, and other maritime themes. After exploring the city, guests can relax in the hotel’s spacious rooms. It’s conveniently located near the central train station and harbor for easy access to transportation.
Because John Lennon and Yoko Ono Stayed There
Yes, the Hilton Amsterdam’s claim to fame is John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s “bed-in for peace.” But that’s not the only reason you should stay here. Located in the center of the swanky Zuid Quarter, the hotel is just a short walk from the old city center, the Concert Hall, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Rijks museum. The hotel also hosts many perks like the Half Moon Lounge where guests can sip martinis and enjoy stellar views overlooking the marina.
The Opposite of the Red Light District
Convent Hotel Amsterdam once served as both a convent and a printing-house, and the historical significance and central location of the hotel make it an ideal place to stay. While travelers will need to hop on a ferry to reach some of Amsterdam’s more popular attractions, the hotel is within walking distance of the Royal Palace and Madame Tussauds. Guests are rewarded for the slight inconvenience of the location with a price point that is a little more budget friendly than other hotels on this list. And who doesn’t enjoy a ride on a ferry?
