Summer Bocktails – Blueberry Blonde Mojito

Who doesn’t love a sweet and minty mojito on a warm summer evening?  But a mojito bocktail with blueberries added?  Estas loco?  I know.  Sounds strange, doesn’t it?  But hear me out.  Sometimes, you just need to use the ingredients you have on hand and pour in a little creative inspiration.  You’ll be amazed at what you can come up with.  For this bocktail, we did just that.

The farmers’ market here in Charlotte is ripe with big, juicy blueberries.  Our mint plant is flush with sweet, fragrant leaves.  And our kegerator is filled with NoDa’s Cavu, a citrusy summer blonde ale. How could we not think of mojitos?  Mix them all together and you have a new take on a classic cocktail.  This mojito isn’t overly sweet since the only sugars come from the blueberries, and the mint packs just the right punch against the citrusy hops.  We think it’s quite refreshing.  Pour a glass for yourself and let us know what you think!

Ingredients:

  • Blueberries
  • Shot of white rum
  • Leaves from a few sprigs of mint
  • Bottle of blonde ale
  • Wedge of lime

Assembly

  • Muddle the blueberries and mint leaves in the bottom of a pint glass
  • Pour in the shot of white rum and beer
  • Top off with juice from a wedge of lime and stir
  • Sit on your back porch and enjoy!

Last summer our cocktails were dank in honor of the incredibly rainy summer we had here in the South (which subsequently led to a record cold winter).  This summer, we’re trying a new theme in the Gourmand household – bocktails!  Yes, you read correctly.  We’re jumping on the craft beer cocktail bandwagon and seeing what we can mix up to enjoy poolside or on a relaxing back porch evening at home.  We have several bocktails lined up for you to try this summer.  Some are traditional recipes we have altered to the craft beer lover pallette.  Others are of our own invention.  Whichever it is, we hope you join us in raising a glass (or mug) this summer.
