Hipmunk Hotels: Northeast Summer Festivals in Annapolis, Jersey City, Providence, and More

As the cold weather melts away, regions that tend to experience the brunt of Mother Winter start to come alive. It always amazes me how they make the most of the little sunshine that they have through an endless number of summer festivals.

The Northeast is a great example. Cities like Annapolis, Jersey City, and Providence delight in shedding their parkas for t-shirts and flip-flops. Here are five festivals that celebrate the best of the summer heat, sunshine, and beach!

24th Annual Annapolis Leukemia Cup Regatta in Annapolis, MD

One of the many ways the maritime city of Annapolis honors the summer is with the 24th Annual Leukemia Cut Regatta. Over 100 boats participate in the race which takes place at the Annapolis Maritime Museum and Eastport Yacht Club on June. When the race is over, event organizers host a BBQ dinner that includes plenty of live music. The goal for the event is to raise $275,000 for leukemia research. A room at the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel will give you a great view of the water.

Revere Beach National Sand Sculpting Festival in Revere, MA

What a better way to celebrate summer beach fun than with a sand sculpting festival! The Revere Beach National Sand Sculpting Festival takes place June 22-24 in Revere. Sand sculptors from around the world travel to Revere to compete for the contest’s cash prizes. Spectators can enjoy their work from the beach’s old fashioned boardwalk. The festival also includes plenty of live music and a fireworks display. For a nearby hotel, check out Comfort Inn & Suites Logan International Airport.

La Festa Italiana in Jersey City, NJ

Maybe it’s because I grew up in an Italian community and looked forward to the various festivals each summer that celebrated the Italian American heritage, but I always wax-ecstatic when it comes to summer Italian festivals. La Festa Italiana, located near one of the country’s largest populations of Italian Americans in Jersey City, is the perfect example of all that an Italian festival can be with plenty of great food and entertainment. The festival is scheduled around Our Lady of the Assumption (August 15) and St. Rocco (August 16). The Westin Jersey City Newport is a comfortable hotel option.

Richmond County Fair in Staten Island, NY

No summer is complete without attending a country fair. The Richmond County Fair takes place September 5-7 in Historic Richmond Town in Staten Island. The fair includes everything one would expect at a county fair from a flea circus to a pie-eating contest to clowns. It’s the NYC you didn’t know existed! Book a room at the Holiday Inn Staten Island for a nearby hotel.

WaterFire in Providence, RI

While WaterFire isn’t a festival, per say, it is a great way to celebrate the summer in Providence. The reoccurring event takes place on select nights between May and November. The city lights up with over 80 bonfires designed by Artist Barnaby Evans to arouse the senses. The fires are accompanied by music, performing arts, and food vendors. Stay at the Providence Biltmore to be in the heart of it all.
